What's worse, when a person who has in the past acted like a normal human suddenly starts posting racist things, or when someone with an astoundingly racist user name posts normal and even informative things?

I think the former, but only because I recently experienced something similar, and it really disappointed me.

The former is way worse. People can learn to do better than racism, so there's some chance that the latter is that person learning rather than that person just kind of temporarily becoming distracted from being a jerk. But it's upsetting and disappointing when someone who was cool suddenly falls into that way of thinking.

Definitely the former, I'd say.

But (1) I'm all about repentance, and (2) while it's weirdly satisfying when someone's all-round ghastly, I try to avoid whole-hoggery.

Sadly, yes on the causation side-- but frankly there's too much of it combined with too much power, in our current political situation.

I am joining the crowd. The latter is a little confusing, and not something to trust (seriously, do you trust Glenn Beck yet?) but not, um, bad?

The former, because the latter sounds like a much easier fix.

The latter can be disappointing if they revert, but less disappointing than the former.

Surprise racism is the worst racism. Predictable boring racism is better.

There are a couple of people that I know of whose politics are super wrong; but if it is not in my face all the time, I can value their other qualities.

I think Sheeyun combines a flinch of not-paying-attention with accepting everything as legit. I don't know why he has such trouble recognizing which part of the curate's egg is which.

Very few people are wrong about everything.
And I don't think anyone is right about everything.

Yeah I'm with the crowd. They both end up at about the same place, "cup of sewage in barrel of wine", but one is disappointing because you thought you had this nice barrel of wine.

"Bigot posts interesting things" doesn't particularly mean they're learning or improving, at all. Racism isn't just for bozos, after all, it's for smart people with interesting tastes too. Artistic Nazis, etc.

It's true I think that fewer people are reared to be bigots than they used to be, so nowadays when you are, it says worse things about you. But it doesn't say you're unsophisticated, just an asshole.
