When I accompanied pals on the Mongolia Charity Rally as far as Kyiv, we generally had quite a nice time except for Moldova - where we had to deal with crazily expensive everything, terrible roads, closed border crossings, and rerouting due to avoiding transnistria; it was generally unpleasant and a huge timesink.
