I went to the toilet at 4am a few days ago, and bumped into Gideon coming back from a toilet trip. Apparently he just takes himself if he wakes up in the night. No idea how long this has been going on for!

(Sophia comes and gets me, for company.)

There's an annual daytime ravey thing that's usually (Foreshadowing!) in Myrtle Edwards park. Late yesterday afternoon, I saw that on my calendar and thought, 'Oh yeah! I better head down there.' After an hour or so of riding a bus and walking on, it must be said, a lovely afternoon into Myrtle Edwards, I saw a whole bunch of construction. And then I remembered.

This year, the event was in Gas Works Park, much closer to where I live. I'd even put that in my calendar item under location. And I'd seen with my own eyes the excellent reason for the change in venue.

I didn't go to gas works. That would have meant more walking on trashed feet, and waiting longer for the bus. Le sigh. See you next year.

Moral: changes to regular times or locations should go in the title in all caps.

High-speed low-budget version: the colors of the historic seaside vacation town are Blue and White, to evoke a strongly Nautical theme.

I will probably have more to say once I get back to Albany. I’m glad to have had a chance, however brief, to see a bit of the Chesapeake!

The Beltway itself is its own cultural experience.

potato chips and spices

For whatever reason, plain potato chips don't appeal much to me any more. The ones in my cabinets stay there uneaten for a long time.

My niece left a bunch of spices, including spice mixes, when she moved out. Today I sprinkled "Slap Yo Mama" over potato chips. It contains salt, red and black pepper, and garlic. It's good; it gives the chips some zest plus even more saltiness. The Creole Seasoning one with similar ingredients minus the garlic wasn't as good. Neither was my Masala mix (but maybe if I mixed it with sugar...?)

The other day I was trying to remember what we always used to eat cinnamon sugar on when I was a kid. I believe it was rice pudding.

no no slippers in washer

Note to self:
Do not wash slippers in the washer. It breaks the rubber soles, even on the Bulky Items cycle.

It's probably okay to wash them by hand, and then to get water out, put them in the washer using only the Drain & Spin cycle. I haven't tried that.

A few unrelated questions

(Some of which I may have asked before, in which case, forgive me.)

1. People often do say that the English subjunctive is in decline. However, literally nobody I've ever heard say this has provided any sort of evidence. Is there any data on this other than "yeah, feels that way to me"?

1a. I've also heard that the subjunctive, or at least some forms of the subjunctive, is more common in USA English than UK English, from somewhat more authoritative sources but with roughly the same amount of evidence.

2. I got into it with somebody on the subject of "flammable/inflammable". I am aware that there are signs that warn about inflammable materials, and also signs warning about flammable materials. Is it actually the case that anybody has ever been confused and thought they were being warned that something could not catch on fire? Or is that just an urban legend / just-so story to explain why the two words mean the same thing and can be found on the same sorts of signs?

3. Not a language question! I've recently found one of the Myth Adventures books in my house. Gosh, I haven't re-read these in 20 years. Worth a re-read, or oh god no, save it for the recycle bin?

Hot, Garden, Dog Class, Firefly, Rat

It has been hot, 106F yesterday, with the wind out of the south-east which always sets off my worst allergies.  Around here they call them the Diablo Winds.  It looks like there is now a cooling trend that will take us back into the low 90's again.  Although the last few days have been hot, in reality this has been the coolest summer we have had for many years.
With the warm weather the garden is cranking out loads of produce.  I really should make pickles tonight. There is enough okra for a couple of jars of pickles, and there are lots and lots of cucumbers, though not very many pickling cucumbers.   The shade cloth seems to be doing its job of keeping things from burning.
Chena's class yesterday went well.  We learned Send and Return.  Each of us had a cone set in front of us, and were to send the dog out and around the cone. Chena was happy to do it, though I'm not sure she quite got the concept.  We practiced having our dogs Stay in the down position while the instructor strolled around playing a loop of ducks quacking on her phone. Chena did break position on that one, but not the next one, which was a squeeky toy and a plastic bag being rustled around. During the  Backup was another new command for the class.  I've been practicing that for some time with Chena and she has it down.  No we are working on going straight back. We practiced Touch, where the dog touches a hand or item with their nose.  The instructor suggested we might want to put a buzzer next to the door so the dog could ask to go out. NO, NO, NO!!  Chena would be much worse than any cat about wanting to go in and out through the door!
While at dog class I handed the instructor, Nancy, a completely revised Core 2 handout.  The one she had given us was terrible.  Last week Kim got very confused about what we had been taught, so I wrote up notes for her. While doing that I referenced the handout which was a hodge-podge of disorganized bad writing.  Since I was already writing up notes, I went to work on it.  Nancy was surprised and a bit taken aback, but after glancing at my work and thinking for a moment she admitted that she knew the Core 2 handout needed work and that it had been hastily pulled together from multiple sources, which was blindingly obvious.  I don't know that I got it all correct, but at least each command is formatted the same, the commands are listed in alphabetical order so you can find them, and instructions don't stop mid-sentence.
Back at the Ranch, I've been spraying Firefly down with water.  She loves it. Then she goes and rolls in the dust. Sigh. Thank goodness there is a silicone based product in her mane and tail so they don't tangle too readily.  The dirt tends to fall right off.
I saw a very large rat out at the hay pile last night. I have no idea where rats like that are coming from, these are rats that normally live near human dwellings and don't do well in our arid landscape.  I suppose now I'll need to bury my compost for a while.  Hopefully the screech owl I hear at night will fly by and take care of the problem. Or Chena will catch it, she tried last night.

Got dolled up for Hot Flash Inferno with T. T is way more into that night than I am: the lowest common denominator '90s and earlier music, the normie dykes. (T has a horror story about their attitude toward "gold star" lesbians.) I wasn't feeling it to the point that I was checking out on the dance floor so hard that T noticed. When you're trans, you get really good at transporting yourself to somewhere else mentally.

Vienna La Rouge and her sweetie turned up again. Whatever the opposite of a bad penny is, she's it: she turns up wherever I am, and she's always welcome to.

Hit Pony afterward. Chatted with English gay boys. It was noice.

If I were running a club night it would feature kinky folk and raver music. That may be one of the reasons I don't run a club night, but what I've just described is basically the all-too-infrequent Petting Zoo events. Other Burner events aren't far off, though; I just don't hear about as many of them as I used to.

I've taken a lot of photos.

My Dropbox Camera Uploads folder was up to 115GB and 18,000 files (dating back to 2010). So I went through and divided it into subfolders based loosely on years. Turns out that I take as many photos per year since Sophia was born as I took in the whole time from 2010 until her birth.

And that I take about 2,000 photos/videos per year, coming to about 15GB.

I also discovered that if you move 2,000 files from one Dropbox folder to another then it takes about 15 minutes to process the changes!

Pretty big fire on Arthur's Seat.

(The kids were just discussing whether the volcano had erupted, which I think we're pretty safe from.)

Internet

I'm having trouble with my internet - still. It is SLOW.  Almost, but not quite, dialup slow.  Donald is having trouble downloading his email.  Web pages are taking forever to download.  Streaming stalls out frequently.  My internet is wireless, broadcast from one of the nearby mountains.  I can understand slow service when a big storm is pouring rain down, winds whipping around the antennas.  But it is a clear, quiet summer day and my internet is SLOW. I'm about to order Starlink.  Much as I don't care for Elon, it is my only alternative.

Dad's surgeon visit went well. He'll have the minimally invasive clips done. The open heart surgeon was willing but discouraging. Dad was concerned with a long recovery, and L and i think it's for the best as we reflect on how well he follows instruction to rest. (Does not follow instructions.) I went to Dad's favorite bar, Dockside, with him and had a few drinks as he had his two beers.

My cousin came to visit semi out of the blue. She stayed in an inn in Pittsboro Thursday night, and i had lunch with her and dad Friday. She was planning on being in town in time for dinner on Thursday night but wasn't.   Dad and i had a drink in City Tap waiting, but then got the news she was very delayed.

Last night i worked much later than usual. I can't believe it's Saturday again.

Just had a lovely lunch sandwich with cream cheese, the tiny wild tomatoes, smoked salmon, pickled red onion and thin slices of cucumber. Wish it had been fancier bread, but it was delicious nonetheless.

Must take advantage of decent weather in the yard.
