There is a motion from the floor to participate in the Mongol Rally 2018. I think it was the "participating in this event may lead to serious injury or death" that clinched it. Or maybe the part where a camel was pulling a Yugo out of a stream.

I would suggest you avoid Moldova, and prepare for a lot of utterly terrible roads once you get into Ukraine and eastward.

What's up with Moldova in particular? I ask because I know someone (from LJ) who lives there.

When I accompanied pals on the Mongolia Charity Rally as far as Kyiv, we generally had quite a nice time except for Moldova - where we had to deal with crazily expensive everything, terrible roads, closed border crossings, and rerouting due to avoiding transnistria; it was generally unpleasant and a huge timesink.

Do you know Christine Chun (can't remember her LJ user name - was it chunski??)? She and her husband did the rally a few years ago and her documentation of it was freaking epic.

I don't! I will try to track her down there. The bits that juli and corvi posted were PRETTY EPIC.

Keep in mind that we went on the Charity Rally, where the point is to deliver the vehicle in at least somewhat working condition to the charity in Mongolia, and not the Mongol Rally where you intentionally drive a piece of shit.

Are you sure this is a good idea given the current geopolitical situation? I know that deep in your bones you don't really care whether an idea like this is good, but I thought it would be remiss of me not to point this out.

Almost certainly not a good idea, but I have the feeling that we may be in for a rough patch that will outlast me. In 2016, when everyone was saying "worst year ever" I was saying "we may soon look back on this as just the beginning."

It did occur to me that I don't even camp.
